Penguicon 2.0 - Friday

by Carrie Dahlby

I’ve never been so glad that I skipped choir as I was on Thursday, April 15th!  Skipping choir allowed me to be online on a Thursday night, and being online on a Thursday night (while listening to “Dementia Revolution” and “The Looney Bin”) lead to a conversation with a friend in #dementia which lead to last second plans to attend the PenguiCon 2.0 in Novi, Michigan on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 16th, 17th and 18th.

Steph was unable to make it to this convention, so I stepped up to the plate and offered to do a con report for the website.   Hope you enjoy it!

Four Musicians of the Apocalypse: Tom Smith, Luke Ski, Tony Goldmark and Worm Quartet – Friday, April 16th, 10pm

I missed the beginning of this, since my companions (Pooh and Ken) and I were still busy showing up from the Chicago area and getting registered.  I’m told that Luke opened the show with “Stealing Like a Hobbit” and he did it without a costume, and had to perform with a boom box, or something.

We probably only missed the first song.  Various coolness ensued, though I don’t seem to recall very much of it.  I do remember that Luke and Tom Smith performed “Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Fanboys”… not a song that Luke wrote, but it was “given” to him from a friend at his wedding.  Tom Smith performed his parody of “Dead Puppies” called “Dead Potters” (a Harry Potter thing).  Tony performed my favorite song of his, “Penguin On The Telly” (a Monty Python thing).  Worm Quartet probably performed “Great Idea For A Song”.  Luke and ShoEboX (lead singer of Worm Quartet) performed WQ’s song “Pacman Is Naked And So Should You”.  Shoebox and Luke also performed Shoebox’ cover of a classic Tony Goldmark song, “I Know You’re A Fish”, much to Tony’s delight and/or dismay.

The ‘Wil’s Not Here’ Improv Hour: Luke Ski, Tony Goldmark, Worm Quartet and Tom Smith – Friday, 11pm

This segment got its name from Wil Wheaton’s absence: Wil Wheaton had to cancel out on the convention about a week in advance, so this took the place of one of the many panels/events that Wil was supposed to be involved with.

The “4 Musicians” thing ran long, but the Improv Hour had to end on time because someone else needed the space.  So, the whole thing was 40 minutes long at best.  It was funny and cute and pretty similar to “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”.  A highlight for me was the cooking hour with Nelda (with Tony Goldmark in a moving portrayal of Nelda).

I finished off the evening with the Rocky Horror Picture Show.  Our friend Moonbeam played Trixie (who sings during “Science Fiction Double Feature”), but I unfortunately missed that and showed up just in time to Time Warp.  I think I’ll see about possibly being involved with Rocky next year, preferably as Janet, or else as Magenta or Brad or maybe Columbia.
