“the Dr. Demento Show” 2003 Report:
I guess releasing the album early must have made all of the dementites of the world very happy, because "Stealing Like A Hobbit" kicked orc ass on the Funny Five all year, making the Funny Five 11 times, the first 8 of which were consecutive weeks, and 6 of which were at #1, the last 4 being it's most recent appearances. All this adds up to it being the #1 most requested song of 2003 on Dr. Demento's Funny 25 of 2003 Countdown, even passing Weird Al's "Couch Potato"! And if that wasn't enough, it also makes me the first artist in 20 years to have the #1 song of the year for 2 years in a row! (The last ones were "Weird Al" in '80 with "Another One Rides The Bus" & '81 with the early demo version of "Yoda", and Ogden Edsl's "Dead Puppies" in both '82 & '83.) Thanks again to all of my fans for your support in 2003, I couldn't have done it without you. As Dr. Demento himself has encouraged, I will go for the three-peat on 2004.
A few other songs of mine have made Dr. Demento's Funny Five in 2003. Earlier in the year, as the TV Show "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" reached it's conclusion, my song "Wannabe A Slayer" from "Uber Geek" made the funny five twice, getting as high as #2, and recently my new version of "88 Lines About 44 Simpsons" from "Worst Album Ever" made the list at #4. Also from that album is a song by the group Sudden Death, "Ozzman", which features a cameo by myself as Ozzy Osbourne, Beavis & Butthead, and has also made the Funny Five countdown five times, twice at #1, ending up at #6 on Dr. Demento's Funny 25 of 2003. Dr. D also played "Star Wars Trilogy Homesick Blues" and "Christmas In Hogwarts" on the show when they were on-topic for the show's theme those weeks. And finally, "Stealing Like A Hobbit" is going to appear on the CD "Dr. Demento's Basement Tapes: Volume 12", available through the Demento Society Fan Club in February of 2004. All in all, I think it's safe to say that 2003 has continued the success I had in 2002. So, thank you again to Dr. D himself, and to all of my and his fans who have supported the show and my music so much over the past several years.

“the Dr. Demento Show” 2002 Report:
I’d like to start this report off with a huge, immense, THANK
YOU to Dr. Demento.
I know usually ‘thank yous’ are saved for the end, but in this case,
I want to start off with it. Dr. D
has been incredibly supportive to me this year, playing my music, allowing me to
perform at some of his live appearances (WindyCon, CapriCon, MarCon, and the
Orange County Fair), and just generally being the great guy that he is, as the
update that follows will illustrate. Thanks
Barry, for everything. J
Prologue: Way back in 1999,
Dr. Demento played “Use The Force”
on his show, the first track from “Uber Geek” to make it on the air, a mere
2 months after the release of “Carpe Dementia”.
In 2000, “Fanboy” topped the
charts and “C’Mon Ride The Bus”
and “It’s A Fanboy Christmas” made
it to the airwaves. In 2001, “Bender Roboto”
aired about the same time I got married, which made a great tie-in transition
song for Dr. D, linking a set of marriage songs to a tribute to the late Douglas
Adams (and if you understand the connection there without any further
explanation, you might be a Trekkie). Finally,
after 3 long years of waiting, Luke Ski fans got the disc all the prophecies
told them about, “Uber Geek”, and
their support was explosive on the Dr. D request lines.
An unprecedented 4 new songs were played from the album, “Wannabe
A Slayer”, “Who Let The Frog Out?”, “In The Line Again”,
and “Peter Parker”, all of which
made the Funny Five.
“Peter Parker” was an instant hit as Spider-Mania was sweeping the nation. Dr. Demento asked me if he can include “Peter Parker” on next year’s exclusive fan club-only CD “Dr. Demento’s Basement Tapes: Volume 11”, to which I of course said yes (You can get the CD by joining his fan club ‘The Demento Society’, and ask for the 2003 package). By the end of the year, “Peter Parker” ended up being the most requested song of 2002, hitting the #1 spot on this year’s Funny 25 countdown. (Click here to see full list.) Thank you to the hundreds of you who requested it, and to the dozens of you who sent me congratulatory messages when the big show finally aired on December 29th, 2002. As my good friend Chris Mezzolesta of "Power Salad" put it, it is "the apex of being a dementia artist". A long time dream of mine finally become a reality.
Speaking
of long time dreams becoming a reality, I was shocked and delighted beyond words
when I got a phone call from the President of Laugh.Com records, asking me if I
would be interested in including my song “What’s Up Spock? - Deep
Space ’99 Remix” (from “Carpe
Dementia”) on Dr. Demento’s next nationally released compilation album “Dr.
Demento’s Hits From Outer Space”, a sci-fi
comedy themed CD. I immediately said yes, and sent him a copy of the song.
This is the first time any of my music has been available for sale at any
major national chain, so this is a big milestone for me.
It will be available for sale on February
11th, 2003 (to the best of my knowledge),
at
the big chain record store near you (ask an employee to direct you to their
comedy CD section and look up “Dr. Demento”), or you can order it online
from Laugh.Com.
The track listing for the CD is as follows:
BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY - Terry McGovern
STAR TREKKIN' - The Firm
THE SAGA BEGINS - "Weird Al" Yankovic
STARDREK - Bobby Pickett & Peter Ferrara
DO THE PICARD - Rusty Humphries & The Bone-heads
CARMEN MIRANDA'S GHOST - Leslie Fish
THEY'RE HERE - Boots Walker
TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE EARTH - Leonard Nimoy
BANNED FROM ARGO - Leslie Fish & The Dehorn Crew
THE BALLAD OF WILLIAM ROBINSON - Bill Mumy
WHAT'S UP SPOCK (Deep Space '99 Remix) - The Great Luke Ski
STAR TRIP - The Congress Of Wonders
Right now, I am working on some new songs for 2003, which I will be submitting to the good Doctor as soon as I am able to get some high-quality recordings made. Until then, you might want to consider submitting a REQUEST for “The Dr. Demento Show” to play either “Peter Parker" or "What's Up Spock? - Deep Space '99 Remix” or whatever your favorite Luke Ski song is! In conclusion, thanks again to both you the fans and to the legendary Dr. Demento for all the love and support in the year 2002, here's to the upcoming year of madness!

Reviews
of Luke Ski by Dr. Demento:
"[The Great Luke Ski] has been a radical Dr. Demento fan for years, and also a big-time hip-hop fan who's now become an ace rapper himself... Naturally, he leads off with a rap about comedians "Funny Man" before going into his popular spoof of TV's Pinky and the Brain, "Insane And The Brain". On these 2 CDs ["Fanboys 'n da Hood" & "Shadows of the Bunghole"] (sold as a set) "the great Luke Ski" deconstructs numerous icons of American pop culture including Star Trek, The Simpsons, MST3K, and, dare I say, The Dr. Demento Show. Hip-hop dominates, but rock, folk, and the Macarena are also grist for Luke's mill. He's not afraid to take chances and get far out... All in all, open minded Dementites (is there any other kind?) should have a ball with these CDs."

"There's a very different sort of musical recycling on this new disc ("Carpe Dementia") by one of our most requested younger artists. Most of the tracks are parodies, mating familiar rock and hip-hop music to lyrics inspired by Star Trek, Star Wars, The Simpsons, Space Ghost, King Of The Hill, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, "Weird Al" Yankovic (on a hidden track), pro wrestling and other pop culture phenomena. Samples from original soundtracks are used liberally and often cleverly, framed with funny raps which Luke delivers with skill and flair. He also does a stand-up parody of Jeff Foxworthy ("You Might Be A Trekkie")."

"The Great Luke Ski, Throwing Toasters, and Tony Goldmark are all people whose first attempts were all but unlistenable, but who kept at it and are now producing some of today's finest funny music." ...AND... "The Great Luke Ski, whose comedy raps "Peter Parker" [from the album "Uber Geek"] and "Stealing Like A Hobbit" [from the album "Worst Album Ever"] have been among our most requested songs of the 21st Century. His live act is really something to see with lots of costumes and special effects."
